The City of Philadelphia is building what will be the largest and most comprehensive GIS in the United States. This paper provides an overview and showcases several representative applications including 1. Streets Department using ArcInfo-based trash truck routing to improve City services and cut costs. 2. Water Department using MapObjects IMS application to coordinate planned street openings with local utilities using the Web. 3. Department of Licenses and Inspections accessing zoning and parcel data via an Intranet ArcView IMS application. 4. Records Department and Esri using digital orthophotography to georeference the City's 600,000+ parcels. 5. Mayor's Office of Information Services building infrastructure necessary for accommodating a distributed municipal GIS.
