Maps to the Rescue - How GIS Helped with the 1997 Fort Collins, Colorado, Flash Flood Emergency Response Efforts Paper Text

Claudia Haack-Benedict

On July 28, 1997, a flash flood hit Fort Collins, Colorado. More than 160 people were rescued, five lost their lives, and it is estimated that the flood caused over $200 million in damages to homes, businesses, and public facilities. President Clinton declared Fort Collins a national disaster area on August 1, only two days after federal emergency teams had arrived. This presentation will explore how GIS played a role in the damage assessment efforts of the teams, how it helped in the recovery efforts, and how GIS will be used in future emergency preparedness for the City.
