The Environmental Data Viewer: An Internet Map Server Paper Text

This paper is an Internet Map Server (IMS) case study. During 1997 we developed the Environmental Data Viewer (EDV). The project's requirements were simple: replicate ArcView Version 1 functionality across the Internet. Users can control the visible themes, add and remove themes, find and identify features, save and reload the view, and use mapped features to query nongeographic databases. Developed using MapObjects IMS, Microsoft Visual Basic 5.0, and MS J++ 1.1, the key to EDV is a configuration database that allows the IMS administrator to create views; identify themes; assign shapefiles to themes; set colors, symbols, and scales; define value and class map renders; and establish queries to additional databases.
