Analysis of the Base Closure GIS Market
Larry DavisThe closure of Mare Island Naval Shipyard collapsed the local economy and eliminated entry-level employment opportunities for working class youth. In response, the Skaggs Island Foundation launched a regional economic development initiative focused on training and employing GIS technicians as part of the $300 million cleanup of Mare Island. This initiative includes (1) developing GIS training programs for youth and displaced defense workers, (2) demonstrating the cost/benefits of using GIS for base closure, and (3) using the Internet to market GIS services to closing bases around the world.
