ArcView Spatial Analyst from a Worm's Eye PerspectiveDana TomlinMany of the concepts and capabilities of ArcView Spatial Analyst reflect ideas on "Map Algebra" that were presented in a book entitled Geographic Information Systems and Cartographic Modeling (Tomlin, 1990). ArcView Spatial Analyst has implemented many of these ideas well, extended a number of them, and effectively placed them within a context of broad functionality. In doing so, however, it has also lost much of the conceptual clarity and operational simplicity of Map Algebra as initially conceived. This paper presents specific suggestions as to how ArcView Spatial Analyst might be reconfigured to regain that clarity and thereby better realize its full potential.
