Customized Geographic Information Systems Training for Coastal and Marine Resource Managers Paper Text

Michael D. Rink

GIS training, specially tailored to an individual discipline, can significantly increase the learning experience for an audience with similar backgrounds and needs. The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute have created a specialized ArcView GIS training program for the coastal and ocean resource management community. The training component seeks first to educate the management community in the fundamental use of GIS tools and then to teach the application of these tools to specific coastal and ocean issues. Training workshops have been developed that allow participants to build coastal and marine GIS applications "from scratch," using local government data sets. This paper addresses the approach that these participating agencies are using to target training to this user community.
