Hands Free and Eyes Up: Collecting Sign Data with the Power of Speech and GPS

Erwin Lehmann
Robert Powell , Kirk Osborn

Austin manages an inventory of over 300,000 street signs. Public safety is a key concern for Austin's sign management team. Austin's challenge is keeping up with the City's growth while improving public safety without increasing the $1 million annual sign maintenance budget. Using a recently purchased speech recognition GPS-based product, the City has documented data collection rate increases of 600 percent while increasing accuracies from 85 percent to 98 percent. The paper will discuss the benefits of using cutting-edge field data collection technology, allowing the City to use GIS in ways that were previously unaffordable.
