This paper describes an attempt to provide a framework for the mapping and estimation of groundwater quality making use of the tools available in ArcInfo. Mapping of the groundwater quality was undertaken for the area administered by Umgeni Water, a regional water authority in KwaZulu/Natal, South Africa. Using the KRIGING method, borehole water quality information could be interpolated to areas where data either are scarce or are not available. Outputs of the KRIGING exercise were mapped using ArcInfo. The application of this methodology is discussed and the benefits and constraints examined. GIS proved to be a powerful tool in the assessment of groundwater quality.
