From Twenty Maps per Year to 2,000 per Day: Using the Internet To Extend Geographic Services

Robert Hartman
Lisa Stapleton

The Internet is providing new opportunities to extend business services. Services that rely on geographic information can be delivered via the Internet using Internet-enabled spatial technologies. The San Diego Geographic Information Source (SanGIS), a regional provider of geographic data and services, partnered with San Diego Data Processing Corporation (SDDPC) to develop a Web site incorporating spatial technologies for delivery of its products and services. This approach has increased the visibility of SanGIS, broadened its service audience, and extended its products into new contexts. This paper examines the technical and business challenges of this effort.
