Information Sharing and Dissemination Using Internet GIS

Zhong-Ren Peng

Internet GIS is a network-centric GIS tool that is used to handle spatial data on the Internet. It combines the advantages of both Internet and GIS to offer public agencies new ways to access, share, and disseminate data and information. It offers the public a new means to access public information without owning expensive GIS software. Specific examples will be given in this paper to illustrate how Internet GIS technology can be implemented to help public agencies and professionals. These Internet GIS applications include interactive transportation maps, data sharing, and ITS applications. The easiness of sharing public information on the Internet will have potential institutional impact on public agencies and citizens. It can raise many questions that involve issues far beyond the technology. This paper will address this organization's impact issues such as who is responsible for data accuracy, what kind of data should be made accessible, how to interpret the published data, and who pays for access and maintenance, as well as Internet access inequity issues.
