Using GIS and GPS To Locate and Map 100-Year-Old Pipeline

Darryn Flexman

Part of the Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District (EVMWD) water distribution system is a 100-year-old agricultural line. This line has no pump stations or booster stations as it uses gravity to transport water. There are no plans or drawings available to show the location of the line or to use for reference if the need arises. To solve this problem Sokkia's GIR1000 GPS unit and software were used to collect the data to integrate into the District's GIS. Points were taken at standpipes, markers, valves, and weirs as the line winds its way through canyons, gulches, and city streets. The data collected were processed to submeter accuracy and exported out as a shapefile. Elevation data were also collected for the purpose of creating a three-dimensional model. Coverages were then created using ArcInfo by snapping lines to the points and attaching relevant data. The result of this project was a well mapped system and a three-dimensional model that shows what kind of terrain the pipeline actually goes through instead of trying to visualize what it looks like on a flat sheet of paper.
