GIS Project Biodiversity Components of the Primorski Krai (Russian Far East)

The Research Center of Primorski Region Association of Indigenous Peoples and Pacific Institute of Geography attains significant success in the creation of information on a technological base for biological resource management. Results were 1. Geographical database (GDB) "National Forests," which contained the forest inventory data (1986-1997) for Primorski Krai. The average area of individual forest stands described in this database, is thirty-five hectares. Total area described by this database is about twelve million hectares. 2. Rare and Endangered Species of the Primorski Krai GDB. 3. Vertebral Species of the Primorski Krai GDB. The first database is an example of a large geographical database. Others are examples of application processing of geographical data with a user-friendly interface built with the help of RAD development tools (Borland Delphi, MapObjects). Above mentioned developments allow (1) forest ecosystems diversity assessment (forest types, groups of forest types, forest formations), (2) species diversity assessment, (3) species richness assessment, (4) identification of old growth and ancient forests and other primary ecosystems, and (5) analysis of probable forest management schemes. Moreover, the achieved results permit the development of analytical systems needed for nature use planning to start.
