Polishing the Jewel of Hawaii Using GISKen SchmidtJames Peirson , Mark Lierman This paper presents how Honolulu's GIS program performed a variety of land use analyses to determine the extent of nonconformities, optimum building densities, open space requirements, street setbacks, and an overall land use plan for Waikiki Beach. Linking land use databases with GIS parcel basemaps, City planners calculated land use ordinance regulations to define subdivision and building plan specifications. The data and maps produced by the analyses were crucial in gaining public support and passage of the proposed City ordinances that are revitalizing the jewel of the Hawaii tourism industry.
