Santa Ana Pueblo is located just north of Albuquerque, New Mexico, in Sandoval County and lies at the confluence of the Jemez and Rio Grande rivers. As one of several pueblos located in the Rio Grande Valley that is operating a thriving casino, Santa Ana is facing many issues that require the balancing of future development and the preservation of cultural traditions. Using GIS as a tool to assist with both objectives, Santa Ana planning personnel recently invested in the collection of natural color digital orthophotography and soft-copy photogrammetrically derived terrain data for use in resource inventory and planning activities. This paper will address the use of digital orthophotography and GIS for past, present, and future stewardship of Santa Ana lands and also discuss the logistical issues of building such a system.
