The Importance of Proper Database Design and Coregistration of Spatial Data Layers
Kevin ReaganMany organizations have tried to use GIS and failed, as measured by degree of practical usefulness and cost-effectiveness of the final systems. Based on research of projects and our own experience with GIS, two key factors have emerged as being critical to the success of a GIS: - Proper Database Design - Involving specialists in database design theory and software engineering in the creation of a GIS. - Coregistration of Spatial Data Layers - Problems arise when separate data layers digitized by different organizations/entities are overlaid. Map features that are actually common to several data layers get digitized several times independently.
