The Importance of Proper Database Design and Coregistration of Spatial Data LayersKevin ReaganMany organizations have tried to use GIS and failed, as measured by degree of practical usefulness and cost-effectiveness of the final systems. Based on research of projects and our own experience with GIS, two key factors have emerged as being critical to the success of a GIS: - Proper Database Design - Involving specialists in database design theory and software engineering in the creation of a GIS. - Coregistration of Spatial Data Layers - Problems arise when separate data layers digitized by different organizations/entities are overlaid. Map features that are actually common to several data layers get digitized several times independently.
