The War on Cracks, and I Ain't Talking About That Plumber

When we say crack at the Street Department in Aurora, Colorado, we aren't talking about drugs or that unsightly repairman's behind. Using the latest data collection techniques the City collected over $1 million worth of infrastructure repairs down to the crack level in less than sixty days with two inspectors working part time. City inspectors sporting a mobile computer and headset walk or drive down the street and speak into their microphone. Their speech is recognized, a GPS receiver attaches an accurate location to their speech, and the ArcView GIS database is automatically populated with fully attributed and spatially referenced data.
