Using GIS To Support Modern Aboriginal Treaty Negotiations in Canada: A Yukon Example

Thomas Hollenhorst
George Smith

To support treaty negotiations, the Ross River Dena First Nation is employing Esri ArcInfo and ArcView GIS to build an extensive land information system. Quick, easy map compilation and printing allows the Ross River Dena to swiftly respond to negotiation issues with informative maps and analyses. This GIS incorporates maps indicating mineral and forestry potential, wildlife resources, traditional use areas, and traditional knowledge to support the selection of 1,820 square miles of settlement land. Each parcel selected will be mapped using GPS, incorporated into the system, and integrated into a land registry for current negotiations and future land management applications.
