On the Utilization of ArcView GIS Within a Distributed, Multiuser, Multipurpose Environment
David SchirmerThe Geographic Information and Analysis Systems (GIAS) group at Southern California Edison provides a wide variety of GIS products and services at all levels within the company hierarchy. In recent years, increasing emphasis has been placed on developing and deploying sophisticated GIS decision support applications onto user desktops. This paper will detail the overall architecture the GIAS group has developed in overcoming the complexity of a distributed, multiuser, multipurpose GIS environment. Special attention will be paid to application development in a client/server environment, graphical user interface customization, database management protocols, and online help system implementation.
