Finding a Polar Bear in a Snowstorm: Tracking of VDOT's Snowplows via GPS/GIS

Virginia DOT has installed an OrbTrac-100 automatic vehicle location system for the tracking of eighty plows in the nrthern Virginia district. The fixed-end application utilizes a MapObjects-based platform to display snowplow location as well as status and provides VDOT with a vehicle trace to display which roads have been plowed or salted. The system also provides a two-way messaging component. In nonsnow months the system can be linked to a data capture package such as Datria's Vocarta for the management and dispatch of maintenance functions.
