Transforming Soil Surveyors into Super ModelsRoss SearleMike Grundy Conventional soil survey relies on soil surveyors developing implicit models of the relationship between landscape, parent materials, and soils. Using raster modeling techniques in ARC GRID, a methodology has been developed to express these models in an explicit fashion, enabling the prediction of key soil attributes. The model uses a hierarchical rule-based approach. The rules determine for each cell the combination of landform features and the likely outcome in terms of soil attributes. The result is a digital surface for each predicted soil attribute, in a form that can be explicitly tested and directly input into other environmental process models.
