Time and Version: History Managements in GIS

Temporal geographic information systems (TGIS) manage the changes necessary to perform version maintenance of objects with updated spatial and aspatial properties. TGIS demands new temporal data type, time operations, spatiotemporal data type, and spatiotemporal operations. Recent studies on management of historic spatiotemporal objects have focused on the version model to maintain tracing history when objects are updated. Spatial databases have version management mechanisms for managing data that vary with time. In this paper, we discuss key issues for the TGIS model and propose a unified temporal version model for managing the history of spatiotemporal objects on multiple time evolution.
