SnowView - Satellite-Based Snow Monitoring for Norwegian Hydropower Companies

SnowView combines satellite images and traditional snow measurements to improve the decision process of flood forecasting and production planning for hydropower companies. The routines for analyses are implemented within the powerful graphical user interface of ArcView GIS, and the system is integrated to a database and standard software. SnowView receives daily satellite images via the Internet. By introducing an easier to use and more cost-effective system, hydropower providers can compare current and historic data and generate reports based on accurate precipitation data. The system is supported by the Norwegian Electricity Federation and the Norwegian Space Centre, and they are pleased to see customer benefits coming from their investments in the necessary space and ground infrastructure.
