ArcAkus: Management of Environmental Noise Using ArcView GIS

Noise is one of the most widespread environmental nuisances of industrial and urban society. GIS technology offers very good tools for noise management. ArcAkus is a comprehensive, ArcView GIS-based noise management system for environmental noise. It includes noise calculation models for road traffic, rail traffic, industrial plants, airports, and so forth. It is used for inventory surveys, impact analyses, and planning projects. The user can test and store scenarios and present planning alternatives for decision making. ArcAkus is modular and can be modified if new calculation models need to be applied. ArcAkus applications include building citywide noise databases that cover forecasted traffic and land use, identifying housing areas, evaluating road design alternatives, planning noise screen locations, and testing noise effects of industrial plant layouts.
