Stream Habitat Mapping Using High-Resolution Digital Photography: Lessons from the Blackfoot River in Montana

Jiri Doskocil

The goal of this project was to develop procedures for stream habitat classification with respect to salmonids, in particular bull trout, using high-resolution digital aerial photography and bull trout radio tracking data. Stream cross-section measurements for selected types of habitat units were used in the image classification process. Bull trout radio tracking data were to be used in an analysis of temporal habitat use patterns. In addition, the resulting habitat map was to be used for general field data collection. Unexpected problems changed our plans.
