GIS Education Development at Westchester Community College

Sam Wear

Drawing from nearly ten successful years of GIS development and implementation in County government, Westchester County (New York) GIS staff were asked to prepare a GIS education implementation strategy for Westchester Community College in Valhalla, New York. Following established/traditional user needs assessment methodologies, GIS staff developed an initial two to three year implementation plan for both academic and operational departments at the college. Concurrently, GIS staff have established an ArcView GIS training lab and teach other introductory GIS courses. Establishment of GIS at Westchester Community College has been accomplished with limited resources with future growth being outlined in the implementation strategy prepared by Westchester County GIS. Information presented in this paper will prove to be beneficial to other government and academic organizations attempting to develop similar GIS education.
