Synthetic Aperture Radar: Potentials in GIS ApplicationsRiadh MunjySynthetic aperture radar (SAR) is a quite recent technique for digital terrain modeling. Different from methods using optical sensors, this technique presents many advantages for GIS applications such as all-weather capability and high potential accuracy. The SAR sensor is mounted on an aircraft or a satellite and is used to make a high-resolution image of the earth's surface. SAR has always been the "sensor of last resort." Even today, many GIS users are reluctant to work with SAR data that are geometrically distorted and difficult to interpret due to speckle noise. In this presentation, we will discuss the potential of this technology and its impact on GIS applications in the next century, problems with SAR data, and estimated accuracy.
