Capability Demonstration of Spatial Data Integration at Arnold Engineering Development Center

Various GIS, CAD, and plant management applications are in use at the Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC). As a result of work requirements, business operations, and limited application integration, these applications are, in general, located within semi-isolated functional domains operating on independent databases. This environment inhibited the mutual sharing of spatial data throughout the AEDC facility. ACS initiated a study to improve application integration and data sharing at the AEDC. ACS teamed with CSC to determine if the general concept of a centralized corporate database holding highly varied data from CAD, GIS, and several relational environments was a realistic solution for AEDC and if COTS software currently on the market adequately provides this solution. A proof of concept was proposed to demonstrate data loading into and retrieval from a corporate database using applications commonly in use at the AEDC. CSC set up a test bed reflecting the hardware and software application environment at the AEDC. Esri proposed a solution including ArcInfo, ArcView GIS, SDE, and SDE CAD Client. The results of the analysis indicated the SDE/SDE CAD Client solution was technically sound and satisfied the requirements.
