Rapid AM/FM/GIS Implementation with Generate Case

Implementing and maintaining automated mapping/facilities management (AM/FM) systems for utilities has traditionally been a laborious and time-consuming process. Every utility has specific data, mapping, and reporting needs, which have been accommodated by either building systems from scratch or customizing existing solutions by hand coding. These approaches result in long development cycles and software that is difficult to keep in step with rapidly advancing technology. This paper describes an alternative approach, which dramatically reduces implementation times and simplifies the maintenance of applications and databases. The approach utilizes a Computer-Aided Software Engineering (CASE) tool to describe and apply each utility's specific needs to a set of standard AM/FM products. The CASE tool enables utilities to rapidly take advantage of the recent developments in Esri software (ODE, MapObjects, and SDE). A case study is also presented that shows how these solutions have been applied to the Indonesian Electric Authority (PLN) to meet their specific needs such as a bilingual user interface.
