Surface Drinking Water Source Watershed Delineation

Albert Perez

Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Environmental Affairs Office (EAO) in partnership with the Washington State Department of Health (WADOH), is converting a State-wide paper map of surface water intakes to GIS format. Once these intakes have been located in the GIS database, EAO's GIS team will delineate the contributing watershed area for each surface water intake. WSDOT will benefit by knowing which water systems to notify in the event of hazardous waste spills on State routes. WADOH will be able to work with owners/operators of all potential sources of contamination within these delineated watersheds to reduce the likelihood and/or severity of contamination incidents. This project will also lay the groundwork for development of an emergency contamination notification system.
