Worldwide Military Spatial Database

Mark Clews

Computer monitors in military headquarters zooming in from a small-scale map of the world to a large-scale map showing a street corner is classic Tom Clancy stuff. Using Esri Spatial Database Engine (SDE) such a capability can be readily constructed. This paper covers what roles such a database could fulfill. The high-level design considerations are also covered. The use of NATO/US/UK digital geographic information is the basis for the source data. This does drive the database structure; however, users of other military or nonmilitary data will find useful guidance. Projection and datum issues need careful consideration for a worldwide database, and some guidelines and points are given. Work in this area is continuing, and from time of writing to presentation of the material at the 1998 Esri user conference further information will be available.
