Using Different Types of GIS Solutions To Manage Enterprise Data in a Competitive Environment

William E. Culpepper

The utility industry is facing great change from a regulated monopoly to a competitive market. The marketplace is demanding that customers have choice in service providers. To retain existing customers and attract new customers, the utility industry has developed brand awareness, packaged value-added products/services, looked beyond traditional borders, and formed partnerships. The opportunities facing utilities include understanding how to compete in a dynamic market, responding to customer demand, compliance with existing and new regulatory requirements, and having better information systems about customers, assets, and markets. GIS is being called on to serve in critical enterprise roles. These systems are extending beyond stand-alone or departmental installations. Different business units need to share and relate common geospatial data. In addition, utilities need to be able to share common geospatial data with external organizations. This presentation will focus on using several GIS capabilities to provide utilities with enterprise solutions.
