Project Overview of the City of Winston-Salem Integrated Network Fire Operations System

Dennis Newman

The City of Winston-Salem's Integrated Network Fire Operations project facilitates communication between all fire stations and provides critical information in graphical form to the firefighters in emergency vehicles. ISDN technology provides the backbone for the network. The project provides support services to the Fire Department. The project team is composed of representatives from the City's Fire and Information Services departments. The objective is to reduce the time to respond to an incident and provide information that will enable firefighters to improve decision making during an emergency. Emergency dispatch information from the City's E911 computer-aided dispatch system provides the address location of the emergency site, which is transferred over radio frequencies to mobile data computers in fire vehicles. GIS software utilizes routing and location functionality to define the suggested route. The GIS software supports linking to document images of critical information. The City has built a street centerline file utilizing global positioning system technology to provide the routing framework. Graphical information will be displayed in each fire vehicle and allow for a touch screen interface. Part of this project is funded through a TIIAP grant from the Department of Commerce.
