Implementing Enterprisewide GIS in Telecommunications Without Any Effort - Right!

Pat Geer
Michael Zaleski

The telecommunications industry has recognized the benefits in GIS for many years. However, few in the industry have a system in place to fully integrate all aspects of their various business units. Generally, there are small groups of GIS savvy individuals who attempt the use of GIS to solve business problems for particular organizations; however, as much as they may attempt to implement true enterprisewide solutions, they never seem to be able to complete the task. An examination of the process that is required for beginning the trek toward a true enterprise GIS solution for telecommunications provides a basic road map for success. Steps included are (a) understanding the business needs, which includes process reengineering; (b) requirements gathering; (c) prioritizing and documenting the requirements; and (d) the solicitation process. This will focus on the aforementioned steps and will provide a blueprint for succinctly communicating business needs to potential developers. Insight will be provided on an approach to use for selecting the appropriate supplier(s) to successfully implement an enterprisewide GIS in a large organization.
