Generalization of Geographic and Cartographic Data in Databases

Lt. Col. Mats Soderberg

A major problem for the military user of GIS is the necessity for installing databases covering the same geographic area in different scales with different geometry, accuracy, completeness, quality criteria, and so forth. The objective is to reduce the number of data sets covering a certain geographic area to one in scale of 1:10,000 or 1:20,000 through establishing a number of on-the-fly generalization operations in the computer, which work when you zoom in or out in the data sets. This presentation will give an orientation of what is going on in the research area in Sweden with a new approach on building the generalization mechanisms based on user-driven rules for generalization and the implementation of these rules in data sets. This generalization research project is conducted in cooperation with Esri and a number of the most prominent players in the generalization area.
