Creating and Marketing International GIS Data
Henrik ChristensenKraks Forlag AS is the publisher of the world's oldest directory. The first edition was published in 1770. The Kraks Directory has over the years grown into several products such as street directories, business directories, and maps. We have been publishing maps in separate publications since 1890. We have traditionally been publishing street maps of Copenhagen and environs and about seventy-five of the largest Danish cities and towns. In 1992 Kraks Forlag AS started the process of digitizing and vectorizing our maps. Quite a lot of time was spent on finding out how to do it and getting the knowledge that a new type of employee was needed, one with a more technical background. We ended up with a platform based on Esri's ArcInfo and ArcStorm. In 1997 we had vectorized all of our maps and started to utilize our vector data in the development of both Internet (www.krak.dk) and CD-ROM applications. The Danish Esri distributor Informi GIS did the necessary programming to make Internet Map Server and MapObjects meet our requirements for applications that are aimed at the consumer market.
