Implementing a FEMA Mitigation Grant Using GIS

Tim Walsh

Catastrophic wildfires continue to be a part of our environment. But what are the contributing factors? How can the pieces be broken down to examine the individual components that add up to the devastation of a large and damaging fire? One approach is through a cursory inventory of the forested community. A forest is inventoried to assess forest health and fire safe construction. As the information is collected, it is used with ArcView GIS to analyze trends and assess hazards, and it is used within the FARSITE fire prediction model. This process was sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency in an attempt to identify high-risk/risk-hazard areas.
