International Standard Metadata: What Does This Mean?

Dave Danko

Metadata, or the data about data, are an emerging concept in the dissemination of GIS data and play an important role in deciding the suitability of data for a given use. Currently the importance of metadata in the collection of GIS data is that they allow the end user to discern the data's availability, evaluate the suitability of data for a given purpose by looking at how the metadata were obtained and what they include, and track the lineage of a particular data set. Metadata also provide information on where to obtain the data. Such concepts will be examined from an international perspective.
