Impact of CGIS Products on Development and Lifestyle in the State of Qatar

Hussain Ali Abdulla Al Sayegh

One of the main strategies of the National GIS Steering Committee is the awareness and spread of usage of GIS technology nationwide, among all types of people living in the State of Qatar in both the public and private sectors. To accomplish that goal, there was a section established at CGIS called Technology Development Section (TDS), which is mainly to serve the purposes of the government agencies and meet the end users' demands and needs of applying this technology in solving our day-to-day problems. The section is designed to allow staff to develop common links or shared information and data and then develop a software product that can be applicable to some of these agencies and contribute solutions to common problems of the public. The value of digital databases is realized when applications, utilizing data from databases, successfully carry out a function or a task. Such applications could be categorized as inventory applications that provide the ability to access data quickly and easily in various GIS databases and display the data in any format suitable to the users, or as analytical applications that integrate data from a variety of databases and generate new information based on users' criteria. This paper describes the primary functions of TDS, the variety of applications it has produced, and where those applications are used.
