Catch 'em Young: Mapping a GIS Course for Students

Moines El-Shafey

The Ministry of Education Geographic Information System Unit, in collaboration with the Advisory Board of Geography, is planning to develop a comprehensive project of geographic information systems for K-12 schools. This project will be designed to bring the power and intelligence of the well-established spatial information industry into the K-12 school area. The major components of the project will be built upon Esri's software, a customized local data set, and a curriculum-based graphical user interface in accordance with the geography course for K-12. The interface will focus on integrating the earth's physical and human systems in Qatar to provide a complete geography environment for grade 12. The curriculum interface will be planned to enable educators and students to learn about the GIS environment and to use it to study the basic physical and human elements of their community. Once accomplished, they have a foundation from which to direct their own studies using this information and technology.
