National Mapping Heritage Project

Krishna Kumar Nair

Rapid urban and infrastructure growth experienced by the State of Qatar during the past few decades has led to frequent national mapping activities, resulting in a rich repository of mapping products. The Centre for GIS, which successfully pioneered implementing a nationwide, fully integrated GIS in the State of Qatar, is also the primary national mapping agency. The Centre has rightly identified the need to preserve its entire mapping heritage in a durable digital storage medium, resulting in initiating the National Mapping Heritage Project in 1997. The objectives of the project are - Digitally archive (scan) all national mapping products of the State of Qatar. - Spatially index all scanned maps/photos. - Create a comprehensive and centralized database information system of the products. The project started with taking exact inventory of all maps, photos, and related project documents of the Centre's Mapping Section. All map products and nonphotogrammetric photo products will be scanned using an accurate large-format color scanner. Photogrammetric products will be scanned using a high-precision, radiometrically and geometrically accurate photogrammetric scanner. The scanned images will be quality controlled and compressed before being stored on high-capacity magneto-optical disks. A comprehensive database of the mapping products and all related information is being created in Oracle. Indexing software is being developed by the Centre using Esri ArcView GIS/MapObjects and Visual Basic.
