Mosques and GIS in the Residential Distribution Process

Lahdan Al-Mohanadi

Reference features are usually used by planners as a guide in the planning or replanning process. For instance, in the State of Qatar it was proposed to use the mosque as a planning reference in the residential areas. That is because the mosque represents a five times a day destination to the residence. This makes the mosque a good base for the distribution of the residential areas. Integrating GIS to the Planning Department in the State of Qatar provides an efficient method for the distribution of the residential blocks surrounding the mosques. This paper describes how GIS helped in using the mosque as a reference in the planning process.
