GIS and GPS are extremely useful tools for environmental and engineering data collection, analysis, and presentation. Within the last few years, developments of these and similar technologies (e.g., remote sensing) have greatly increased the types and sophistication of their applications. In addition, the combined use of these technologies creates a very powerful tool set for applications in the environmental and engineering industries. As these technologies continue to develop and increase in complexity, the need for attention to proper implementation also increases. IT Corp. was contracted to identify and map the client's facilities in selected California counties. We were then to obtain municipal water well locations and determine their proximity to the client's facilities. The combination of GIS and GPS is well suited for this application. The process of geocoding the facilities, obtaining digital well locations, using GIS to conflate the two data sets, and ground truthing using GPS was attractive to all involved. This paper describes the steps we took, the mistakes we made, and what we learned along the way.
