Opinions have differed among surveyors and other GIS professionals about the role for each in building and maintaining GIS databases. How accurate should GIS basemaps be? Who should maintain and certify their accuracy? What are appropriate uses for GIS maps? How can a licensed surveyor's legal obligation affect the public use of GIS maps? Two experienced representatives of their professions provide a "point/counterpoint" dialog from which the common ground of benefit to GIS users will be resolved.
