Mapping an Opportunity Surface of Crime

This paper presents a demonstration on the use of the ArcView Spatial Analyst extension for desktop ArcView GIS to create an opportunity surface of crime. The opportunity surface is created by mapping data that prior research suggest are likely and unlikely targets for crime. These data sources derived from crime and other geocoded data in a Washington D.C neighborhood are mapped in layers to create a three-dimensional friction surface whereby areas of high opportunity may be identified as potential places for crime.
