Automating Labour Intensive Cartographic Tasks

Edith Punt
David D. Watkins

There exist a number of cartographic procedures that have been traditionally labour intensive and time consuming, even in a digital environment. Various tools have been developed using ArcInfo's macro language, AML, to automate these tasks while still retaining enough user interaction to allow for subjective cartographic reasoning and decision making. This flexibility ensures cartographically correct results within the context of final map products. While these tools have been written to overcome specific obstacles in a number of projects, their underlying concepts are adaptable to a variety of cartographic challenges.
