In late 1995, the Jemez Pueblo initiated a GIS program to assist tribal leaders in the management of significant cultural and natural resources located on or near the 89,000 acres of tribal trust land. Because adequate commercial and governmental data did not exist for Jemez tribal lands, data was acquired firsthand using a GPS and a conceptual database design that permitted data capture and classification. Today, this database encompasses 47,000+ records that permit GIS spatial analysis/query of detailed archaeological and environmental information. This paper examines the developmental process and methods used including the role of Esri's Environmental Conservation Program.
