The present study attempts to develop the MEDicinal Plants Information System (MEDPIS) for the Banavasi range, Karnataka State, of Western Ghats, India. It builds a system whose design and capabilities prove helpful in manipulating data on plants of medicinal value. Intensive field study was carried out with the help of forest department officials and local people along 33 transects covering all categories of forest type classified from Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) satellite data. The information on medicinal plants, such as local name, parts of the plant used, medicinal value, photographs, and video materials, was collected and stored in the database. Additional data from published floras, books, records, and reports was also included. The information was imported into ArcView GIS and a graphical user interface (GUI) was developed using Avenue programming. This customized package assists forest planners and other users to query the data based on characteristics such as local name, disease, and vegetative characteristics. The user can also view the scanned images and video files about the plant. Thus the system offers a readily accepted and easily manipulated illustrated encyclopedia approach. Keywords: Medicinal plants, Avenue programming, Western Ghats
