To help County officials and local stakeholders protect the resources of the Maurice River while meeting growing economic demands, an integrated planning tool was developed to determine recreational capacity. ArcView GIS was used to define the spatial extent of the Maurice River region and to calculate the available areas for recreational use while providing sufficient buffers around sensitive areas. An interactive Visual Basic interface was incorporated with the GIS to perform the recreational capacity analysis. The integration of GIS tools to perform calculations and to supplement the spatial visibility of the project proved to be very useful in providing County officials and local stakeholders with an excellent planning tool to help them in their decision making process.
