Geographic Analysis of Commuting to Menlo Park, California
Track:  Transportation and Logistics

Many employees of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in Menlo Park, California, have a difficult commute; some travel three hours a day. The stress and time spent commuting require planners to consider alternatives and mitigation measures. Making maps of employees' homes and commutes using standard USGS data is an easy, inexpensive way for planners to visualize commuting difficulties. The addition of travel times and traffic forecasts creates a decision support tool. Analysis in a geographic information system, in this case ArcView GIS with ArcView Spatial Analyst, helps ensure that planners can base reactions to the commuting situation on the best available information.
