 High-Tech Mapping Helps the Environment

The Integrated Training Area Management (ITAM) program at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, is using GIS, GPS, and video mapping to help detect, monitor, and reduce erosion in the harsh desert environment of southeast Arizona. The video mapping images are geographically located via GPS and are then exported into a GIS system (ArcView GIS). This allows land managers to do predictive analysis with ArcView GIS and ArcView Spatial Analyst as well as to record still or moving images of the area for historical records or follow-up at a later date instead of relying on written notes to judge the condition of the area.
